Chapter 38 – Shara

Prologue Previous Chapter

Shara

“Come on, Oola” Shara whispered, staring at the black water, lapping quietly against the shore. “Come back to me.”

“Do you see them?” Lam called out, his voice breaking. “Mika… Mika!?” He roared again.

“Oola? Oola?” Pak shouted shrilly, staring wide-eyed at the lake.

Clouds drifted through the night sky, ever east.

The lake was silent.

Reya stifled a shriek, unwilling to say what they all were thinking.

“No.” Shara moaned, fighting back her own wail. “No. Oola. Come back. Come back now.”

A brilliant flash of light rippled across the night sky, green and gold against the starry bowl of the sky, sparkling and shimmering as it flew northwards, flaring brightly for a moment before it sputtered away into darkness.

What was–

“I have her!” Oola choked, her voice thick with pain.

Immediately, Barak and Lam dove towards her, their arms cutting through the water like spinning spears.
